SharkieCon Australia 2014!

It feels like only a few days ago that the Black Milk Birthday Party antics were wrapping up for 2013… and yet here we are now just recuperating from the sheer insanity that is SharkieCon!!

The first SharkieCon to hit Australia, this was truly a weekend to be remembered!

I spent the weekend sunning myself by the pool at Aloha Waters with five beautiful women who really made the weekend extra special. Our holiday house was beautifully appointed and was on the canal at Broadbeach Waters.  This was truly a restful and luxurious retreat, perfect for a girls weekend away!

Bikini: Zimmermann

We made the pilgrimage to Brisbane for the Birthday Party, this year held at the Queensland Museum; what a venue!

I had my makeup done by the wonderful Sarah Kay, she always looks after me for my creative make up needs! I stocked up on bindis and we got quite sparkle happy with my unicorn makeup look for the night 🙂

I wore my custom unicorn play dress, I call it the “Lexie Play Dress” – it was made for me as a goodbye gift when I left Black Milk a few months ago (and I adore it!). I also wore the Black Milk En Pointe Tulle Skirt which is such a gorgeous and flattering piece.

Sharks, whales and underwater creatures surrounded the partygoers in many rooms, an aerial gymnast curled and floated on her ring suspended from the roof, and beautifully costumed ethereal creatures on stilts walked amongst the sharkies who were dancing like there was no tomorrow!

All in all, a spectacular time, and I cannot wait to do it all again!!

long distance love affair, pt. II

There’s a timid sense of wanderlust within me that sparks up every now and again, and keeps me on my toes. This year I’ve had a  few toe-tinglings for Perth, one of my favourite locations.

The coastal suburbs of Western Australia are the most supreme combination of bush and beach, two of the most grounding elements in my life. This makes WA the perfect place to recharge my batteries!

My bestie snapped these shots when I was doing just that, earlier in October. We scouted through miles of seaweed and mermaid’s purses to find the most delightful sea shells, and we even encountered a contently snoring seal on a secluded part of the untouched shore.

square eyes.

I have hump day blues! Or greys… in this case.

I felt like I was camouflaging too much into my office, staring deep into the soul of the iMac screen. So I took a quick break to jump around outside, warm my numb air-conditioned toes and breathe in the busy city air.

Being outside always cheers me up 🙂

Gipsy Boy

I have quite the love affair with Perth (and there’s more to come about that later 😉 ) and this little boutique definitely adds to the reasons why!

I discovered Gipsy Boy Boutique on instagram a few months ago, and knew straight away it was right up my alley! My best friend checked it out and agreed, and we made a date to visit this adorable establishment on my next Perth holiday.

Sure enough, when I arrived it blew my expectations out of the water 🙂

The shelves were stocked with great labels that perfectly complemented the carefree bohemian vibe of the store, gorgeous sparkling crystals, and a wide assortment of vintage teacups to choose from.

Another reason to adore Gipsy Boy is that they combine my three all time favourite things… tea, food & fashion.

Delicious and nutritious raw desserts accompany a fresh tasty menu using locally sourced food, and a range of teas to suit any tastebuds 🙂

We were very well looked after this quiet morning at Gipsy Boy Boutique, and it’s very safe to say that we will be back! 🙂

Mother Nature ||

“have you heard of the girl with the sun on her skin, who can make flowers grow with her light from within?

and she runs through the world leaving life in her wake, with blossoms all lining the path that she takes. she must be quite shy for she’s never been seen, but she’s what paints the grass such a rich shade of green.

i’ve heard people say that there’s dew in her veins, that whenever she’s lonely or hurting, it rains.  and if you listen on nights that are early in spring, you might just hear her voice on the breeze as she sings…”

Maple quinoa granola

I have recently begun my journey to better health by way of a dairy free, gluten free, low FODMAP diet.

FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Dissacharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols and refers to the indigestible sugars present in many foods.

This new diet has really pushed me to further my understanding of a balanced healthy diet, and is definitely testing my cooking skills and creativity!

I recently read through Gwenyth Paltrow’s recipe book “It’s All Good” and found lots of healthy new treats to try! I began with her breakfast Quinoa Granola, modified to suit a low FODMAP diet.

Having tried quinoa flakes before (and hating them!) I was a bit nervous about this recipe, but I was so pleasantly surprised! This is a super delicious snack I’d happily eat any time of day.

20140726-092356.jpg

Ingredients:

– 3 cups quinoa flakes
– 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
– 1/2 cup organic maple syrup
– 1 cup raw walnuts (roughly chopped)
– 1 cup pumpkin seeds (roughly chopped)
– low FODMAP fruits for serving (banana is my fave!)

Method

1. Preheat your oven to 200’C, and line a baking tray with baking paper
2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the olive oil and maple syrup
3. Add the quinoa flakes and mix thoroughly to combine
4. Spread the coated quinoa flakes on the tray. I also sprinkled my quinoa flakes with some Himalayan pink salt for extra minerals.
5. Bake until golden brown and crispy! I stirred my quinoa flakes once after 10 minutes, and every five minutes thereafter. Keep an eye on them to ensure they don’t get too crispy! In saying that, some of mine were a little burnt, but I quite like the burnt sugary taste so this didn’t bother me 😛
6. Allow quinoa flakes to cool completely before mixing with the other ingredients.

Serve with almond milk and your choice of fresh fruit, and enjoy!
