Body Appreciation Post Pt I

Everyone has their insecurities… I know I certainly have a few up my sleeve. But intermittently, I am able to rein these in and remember to be grateful to have a healthy, active, and functional body – when it chooses to behave itself, that is!

One body part I have always been okay with, are my hands.

 

 

I’ve often struggled with feeling too tall, or having bigger feet than all my high school girlfriends, or feeling a bit too clumsy with my big hips. But I never minded having long, lanky hands!

These hands have held my friends and family close, have stroked my dog Lacey when we said our final goodbye, they’ve reached the piano and flute keys (yet never mastered the guitar) and they have guided my horse Sarah safely when I would ride in the afternoon sunshine. Nowadays these hands of mine have become essential to my everyday adult life in the workplace and in my home, they support me in my yoga practice, and they carry my groceries so I can cook and nourish my body.

Essentially my hands facilitate the nourishment of my body, my heart, and my mind.

Many of us don’t realise how lucky we are to have our health, it is so important and one day, it could be all that you have.

Day by day I learn to appreciate a little bit more about myself, it’s a hard task to unlearn all that we have been bombarded with by advertisements and television programmes that suggest that there shall forever be room for improvement.

But we must start somewhere!

Matcha Green Tea Power Smoothie

…taking a tentative sip, I discovered that this drink had a delightful light flavour and was very refreshing!

I’ve recently moved into the city and closer to my work, which leaves me with much more free time in the mornings. To be honest, I usually use this time really productively by laying in the one spot on the couch for an hour slowly sipping my coffee and scrolling through Facebook and Instagram… 😉

Today I decided to make myself a healthy little green smoothie for breakfast and actually do something with my spare time. I’ve been getting back into the habit of making myself a Matcha tea in the mornings sometimes instead of a coffee for a bit of an antioxidant boost. But this morning I decided to incorporate my Matcha hit into my smoothie instead!

  • three large handfuls baby spinach & rocket mix
  • 1/2 cup chopped pineapple
  • 1 maple water or 1 cup purified water (this is Low FODMAP friendly – if you’re not following FODMAPs you could use coconut water)
  •  1 tsp maca powder
  • 1/4 tsp matcha tea (I recommend Panatea or Kenkotea ceremonial grade)
  • 1 inch frozen banana, chopped
  • 1 small sprig fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 small sprigs of fresh mint, chopped

I gave this a good blitz in the Nutribullet until it looked green and creamy.

Fresh & Raw Wellbeing Smoothie Delight

For an easy brekkie on the go, I’ve been whipping up this light and delightful vanilla & cinnamon smoothie!

Cinnamon & Maca are my super-foods of choice for my morning smoothie – they have a terrific array of benefits which include hormone regulation. I have had success with clearing up my skin and reducing PMS by increasing my Maca powder intake.

Here’s how to make your own 🙂

You’ll need:

• 1 1/2 cups unsweetened vanilla almond milk
• 1 1/2 tbsp Vanilla & Lucuma Paleo Fermented Protein Powder from Amazonia
• 1/4 tsp organic Ceylon cinnamon
• 1 tsp organic raw Maca powder
• 1 tsp organic maple syrup
• 1/2 a banana

Using a blender, combine all ingredients throughly, serve with an extra sprinkle of cinnamon & enjoy!

Recently I was lucky enough to attend the Real Food Revolution event, held at the Crowne Plaza in Surfers Paradise.

This was an amazing opportunity to open my mind up to some new health and wellness information; and gosh, there is SO much to learn!

One presentation that really struck a cord with me was Therese Kerr‘s speech on organic beauty products.

It is hard to imagine that beauty or self-care products could be poisonous, particularly when the label refers to “organic”, “pure” or “safe”. The reality is that unless you read the ingredient label, understand organic certification and consider the packaging you really don’t know what you are putting on your skin and in your body by way of absorption through the skin.

You can absorb MORE toxins from personal, skin and hair care products than you can absorb from your food!

Our skin is said to absorb chemicals up to 10 times faster than by way of ingestion and that is because our skin simply doesn’t have the digestive enzymes to break down the chemicals that our digestive system has available to it. The average woman puts over 200+ chemicals a day on her skin, of which 65-70% is being absorbed by the body… yuckie! The Divine by Therese Kerr range of natural products are certified by Australia’s most stringent certification body, The ACO, and are also Australian made.

Therese recommended using an app called “The Chemical Maze”, so that you can look into what precisely is within your products. Nowadays before I purchase any products I am sure to check the ingredient list and look each chemical up to see if it is naturally derived, and safe to use.
